Sara McGaughey, MSTOM, L.Ac. received a Master of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine form the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine.
Despite loving her profession, she thinks it's a darn shame she's not a professional soccer player.
When not daydreaming about her next new adventure, she enjoys all sorts of sports (running, yoga, cyclocross, hiking mountains, etc.), riding her motorcycle, and playing the piano.

Acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of Qi (pronounced "chee" and meaning life's force and substance) flowing through meridians, or pathways.
Chinese theory tells us that Qi is what gives us our physical form and keeps us alive.
Directing Qi with acupuncture needles, massage, or herbs can not only treat the physical body, but also the mind and spirit.
By inserting filiform (solid) acupuncture needles into acupoints, Qi flow is regulated.
This process brings Qi to areas that are deficient and drains areas that are in excess.

Community acupuncture is practiced in a group, rather than one-on-one, setting.
Don't worry!
You won't be baring much skin.
The treatments are primarily on the front of the body and mainly on distal points (legs, arms, hands, feet, ears, etc.).
You will zone out and relax in a nice comfy chair for an hour or so.
This is the way that acupuncture is traditionally done in Asia.
Community-style clinics run on a sliding scale in order to make them more affordable, and so that people can get the amount of treatment they need in a shorter period of time.

Please make sure to arrive 15-20 minutes early, if you would rather fill our paperwork out in the clinic.
Also, please make sure to wear loose, comfy clothing that can be rolled up to your elbows and knees.

We hope you all are taking good care!
We miss you all so much and are disappointed to have to extend our closure.
However, our community's health and safety is our top priority, so we will continue to follow Mayor Bowser's mandates as well as CDC guidelines to inform our response to this pandemic.
