The tradition of acupuncture theory is that energy flows within the human body, much like water flows down a river and this energy can be utilized to allow the body to become balanced and restore health. This energy flow is called Qi (chi). When the flow of Qi becomes disrupted from injury or other factors much like when rocks in river block the flow of the water, imbalances occur in our body.

Acupuncture aims to correct imbalances of the Qi and restore health through stimulation. The stimulation is brought about when needles are inserted through the skin at points along the meridians of the body. Research has found that pain relief occurs when acupuncture stimulates nerves. Acupuncture also can cause naturally occurring pain relieving chemicals, called "endorphins" to be released as well as cortisol to reduce inflammation in the body.

Insertion of the needles goes unnoticed by some patients, while others feel a small pinch followed by a sensation of tingling, numbness, ache, traveling warmth, or heaviness.
Needles remain in place for 15 to 40 minutes, during which time most patients experience a sense of profound relaxation.
Some patients notice a relief of symptoms or feel more energetic in the days that follow treatment.
