I love practicing in Marin County. I've been treating patients here for more than a decade, first as a massage therapist, then as a licensed acupuncturist. About 15 years ago, I studied Chinese medicine formally, but my interest in alternative medicine started as a child, when my family traveled in Asia. Inspired by seeing other cultures using plants as medicine, I went on to explore plant biology, cultural anthropology, and East Asian studies at UC Davis.
These subjects led beautifully into graduate studies in Chinese medicine. I know pain can rule your life. But why let it? Acupuncture is excellent for pain management, and I've helped many patients in San Rafael, and throughout Marin, recover from traumatic injuries.

Part of what makes Chinese medicine so effective is the specificity of diagnosis.
Two people may complain of the same symptom, like a headache, but may be treated differently depending on their underlying diagnosis.
Your diagnosis may change from appointment to appointment, improving with treatment overtime and sometimes regressing in periods of stress.
During your first visit, I'll spend 15 to 30 minutes learning about you.
I may ask about your sleep, eating habits, digestion, urination, elimination, sex drive, and menstruation.

This is one of the first questions I hear when someone finds out that I'm an acupuncturist.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which includes acupuncture and herbal remedies, is a complete medical system that has developed over thousands of years.
We treat many of the same ailments addressed by Western medicine.
I find that Chinese medicine excels in moderating anxiety, insomnia, menstrual cramps, stress, allergies, immune disorders and chronic pain.
TCM may be of particular help to you if you are suffering from an enigmatic disease, such as endometriosis, that Western medicine is still struggling to understand and treat.

Chinese herbal formulas offer a wonderful way for you to participate in your treatment and continue it at home.
As part of my holistic medicine practice, I combine herbs, acupuncture and bodywork to form a cohesive treatment plan.
I may prescribe herbs in the form of capsules, pills, powders to mix with hot water, and sometimes as raw herbs to be cooked by the patient at home.
We want to choose the option that will give you the best results, and that you'll be able to take as directed.

With massage as part of your session, you'll feel the benefits and so will I.
I use bodywork to assess and diagnose your condition, as well as loosen tight muscles and make them more receptive to acupuncture needles.
My massage style incorporates several traditional Asian medicine techniques-Tui Na, reflexology, acupressure, Jin Shin Jytsu and Chi Nei Tsang-to help you relax and restore balance.
In warm, serene surroundings, you'll experience a blend of circulation-awakening massage, passive stretching, and acupuncture.

Cupping was in the news when US swimmer Michael Phelps and many other athletes were spotted with the telltale circles on their backs during the 2016 Olympic Games.
These sports stars rely on the Chinese medicine technique of cupping to release muscular tension and enhance their athletic performance.
Even though athletes and Hollywood stars (such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston) seem to have discovered cupping fairly recently, it's been a healing art for likely 2,000 years.
My patients enjoy the benefits of cupping, which I describe as a reverse massage.
