For more than 3,000 years, acupuncture has been a trusted technique used by healthcare providers in many parts of the world. We know that acupuncture has existed since at least the Han Dynasty in China more than 2,000 years ago. It was introduced in Europe in the 17th century. Only recently has modern scientific research into the effects of acupuncture been undertaken, yielding a growing evidence base of clinical findings that support the use of acupuncture for a number of conditions, diseases and disorders.

Acupuncture is taught in European medical schools and applied in nearly all fields of medicine in Eastern countries. In the United States, perceptions of acupuncture are evolving alongside mounting scientific research, and it is rapidly solidifying its legitimacy as a valuable therapeutic technique. The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture was founded in 1987 by a group of physicians who had graduated from the Medical Acupuncture for Physicians Training Program at the UCLA School of Medicine.
Services
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is the professional organization of allopathic (MDs) and osteopathic (DOs) physicians that advances the evidence-based integration of the practice of medicine and acupuncture to serve our patients.
Membership requirements for the Academy were established in accordance with the training guidelines outlined by the WHO-recognized World Federation of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Societies.
The AAMA represents the highest standards of training and proficiency among physicians practicing in North America.
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (AAMA) was founded in 1987 and is the only national professional society of North American physicians who have incorporated acupuncture into their medical practices.
The purpose of the Academy is to integrate the concepts of traditional and modern acupuncture forms with Western medical training, thereby producing a more comprehensive approach to today's health care needs.
AAMA encourages ongoing scientific research and dialog between colleagues through conferences, symposia and special events.
Whether you're a brand new member of the AAMA or you've recently decided to join the ranks of your fellow physician acupuncturists as an active member of this growing organization, we're glad you're here!
As the health care landscape continues to change and acupuncture assumes an ever greater role alongside the practice of modern medicine, your membership and unique contributions to the AAMA are needed more than ever.
Please review the many benefits enjoyed by AAMA members so you'll be able to take full advantage as a newcomer - or as a longtime member.
As the scientific evidence mounts in support of medical acupuncture, the AAMA will continue its efforts to promote new discovery and encourage clinical research.
All members are invited to share scientific articles and research findings with AAMA staff so we can promote your work.
Your contributions to the clinical evidence base for medical acupuncture can improve patient outcomes and help shape the future of our field.
The AAMA's Medical Acupuncture Research Foundation was established to draw attention to the important work our members are doing and to support clinical and scientific research relating to medical acupuncture.
Members of the AAMA's Education Committee searched and collected references from the Medical Acupuncture journal related to the subject of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a resource to physicians interested in this topic and looking for a source of subject material.
AAMA members can access the journal for free through this website once logged into your AAMA member account.
